Welcome to Ogilvie High School
Term 4 Welcome
It is hard to believe we have moved into Term 4 already! Our last term was a big one for the project and we ticked off some big items from our project plan, not the least of which was unveiling our new school’s name and identity. It was great to have this announced and we were really pleased to see such a positive reaction from the community.
We thank Kate Slater for her work with Ogilvie High for the first half of Term 4 and welcome Deb Day as Acting Principal at the Ogilvie Campus for the remainder of the year.
Hobart City Partner Schools Collaboration
Our Transition Team has undertaken a tremendous amount of work over Term 2 and Term 3 to engage with our feeder schools and families.
During Term 3 our feeder school students were provided with personalised school tours to experience subject learning in maths, English, Hass and arts subjects. We had really positive feedback from participating students and pleasingly, we have seen a significant shift of our Year 6 feeder school students enrolment cohort to our school.
Further transition plans for Term 4 include taking some of our current Year 7 students on personalised visits to each feeder primary school to provide a unique student perspective on what to expect when walking through our school gates next year. We are also planning intensive individualised transition programs at the Ogilvie Campus for students with disabilities. Staff will be working closely with these families to ensure their transition to Hobart City High is a positive and well supported one.
We have also locked in our orientation day for 1 December. This is such an important and exciting date on our calendar to help prepare students for their transition.
This term, we will be finalising our Peer Support programs to meet the needs to the new school. This includes making sure that our incoming Year 7 boys at the Ogilvie campus will have plenty of opportunities to interact with the older students, including the older boys from the New Town Campus. There will be no changes to the very popular Big Sister Program at Ogilvie, which will continue to support our new Year 7 girls. We are going through our Peer Support training program in late November, and you will see these leaders in action on our Orientation Day on 1 December.
Our Curriculum Team have also undertaken a power of work to get us ready for next year. This work has involved our teachers collaborating across our campuses, working together to produce our 2022 offerings.
The curriculum has been mapped as part of a two-year program, with comprehensive plans for each grade across our core learning areas. Last Term we were also able to share with our feeder school families an overview of the learning program for Year 7.
Positive Behaviour Support Program
We have developed our new Positive Behaviour Support Program. This is aligned to our Department of Education Values of Courage, Respect, Aspiration and Growth. The System fully describes positive behaviours and will use the same processes across both campuses to manage positive behaviour and behaviours that are not aligned to our values. Importantly, this new program has been guided by valuable input from our students.
School House Names
We are getting close to finalising new School House Names, with staff and students participating in surveys and focus group workshops. From this work it looks likely that the proposed house names will be linked to nature and natural elements, with potential for exploring the possibility of using indigenous names. This also aligns with some of the feedback we received as part of our earlier naming and identity work.
Works have commenced to provide improvements to the Ogilvie campus of the Hobart City High School in readiness for the start of the 2022 school year.
The contractor Fairbrother Construction commenced work in September to upgrade the general learning areas and student bathrooms in N Block, as well as the student bathrooms in S Block. Works to create an additional workshop and upgrade the student bathrooms in the MDT building are almost complete.
At the New Town campus, design work is progressing for construction works to commence in 2022. This work will deliver a new student common room and make a new connection between the school grounds and the quadrangle.
Keep an eye out for our new school website which is under construction and coming soon!
